Located in downtown Baltimore near the Inner Harbor and Camden Yards, you won't find a more vibrant place to work!Job DescriptionUnder limited supervision, plans, coordinates, leads, and monitors quality improvement initiatives within clinical service departments and across both UMMC campuses. Communicates with hospital leadership (Directors, Chiefs, Chairs, VPs, SVPs), clinical teams, and other departments (Performance Innovation, Infection Prevention, Nursing, etc.) to drive institutional change toward high reliability and Zero Harm. Ensures awareness of, and continuously implements, the UMMC Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QAPI) program and the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) goals. Provides leadership and direction to multi-disciplinary teams (including physicians and senior leaders) to collaboratively accomplish quality improvement strategies at the hospital. Accountable for the overall quality of care provided to all patients in the designated clinical service departments across both campuses, as well as compliance with quality requirements outlined by CMS, Joint Commission, and disease-specific certifications. Collects and analyzes data, conducts presentations, provides consultation, and staffs and leads service-specific and hospital-wide committees. Promotes UMMC on its journey to become a High Reliability Organization (HRO) through robust quality improvement tools and by promoting a Just Culture.The role encompasses various responsibilities (e.g., subject matter expert, coordinator, educator, project manager, data analyst, facilitator, mentor). A working knowledge of clinical workflows and strong leadership skills are vital to gaining credibility and collaboration from colleagues. Duties include working with UMMC clinical service departments across both campuses on quality improvement strategies to:

  • Enhance clinical/patient outcomes
  • Maximize the hospital's financial reward within Maryland's pay-for-performance programs
  • Optimize the hospital's ranking within Vizient's Q&A dashboardWorks with hospital leadership, staff, advanced practitioners, and physicians to provide a systematic approach to identify, measure, monitor, and evaluate quality improvement activities to foster a Zero Harm environment while promoting principles of a High Reliability Organization. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with key medical staff, including Chairs and Chiefs; collaborates with clinical service departments; and serves as a vital quality improvement resource to clinical teams and support staff.Principal Responsibilities and TasksThe following describes the general nature and level of work performed. It is not an exhaustive list of all duties.
    • Applies expertise toward coordinating and implementing activities on the journey to becoming an HRO with a focus on Zero Harm.
    • Collaborates with hospital and Quality leadership to direct and implement the bi-campus, integrated quality improvement program, including:
    • Develops and oversees implementation of the hospital-wide quality improvement program, leading multidisciplinary teams across campuses, aligned with hospital priorities and strategic goals.
    • Collects, reviews, analyzes, and monitors hospital performance data to identify trends impacting patient care and financial performance.
    • Leads and manages special quality improvement projects, identifying resources, involved personnel, and project requirements.
    • Collaborates with leadership to prioritize improvement efforts and ensures action plans are implemented for sustained improvements.
    • Participates actively in key hospital quality committees and projects, often crossing both campuses.
    • Works with senior leadership to identify annual quality priorities aligned with strategic initiatives.
    • Facilitates clinical review and problem-solving using quality improvement methodologies such as RCA, PDSA, Lean, etc.
    • Develops and delivers education on quality improvement methodologies to staff and medical personnel.
    • Monitors quality indicators related to Maryland's pay-for-performance programs and hospital performance dashboards.
    • Provides consultation to departments on quality and utilization data, trends, and improvement plans.
    • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards, including TJC and CMS, and participates in accreditation visits and tracers.Qualifications
      • Master's degree in Nursing or related healthcare field or equivalent experience.
      • Current licensure in Nursing or related field.
      • At least five years of progressive experience in quality improvement activities, with two years in leadership roles.
