The Student Conservation Association (SCA), Americas #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire students for the programs.

Site Visit Dates: 6/4 6/10

Training Dates: 6/14 6/23 (paid mandatory training)

Program Dates: 6/26 8/11

Location (City and State): Assateague State Park & Pocomoke River State Park (Berlin, MD & Snow Hill, MD), Gunpowder Falls State Park (Middle River, MD), Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary (Upper Marlboro, MD), Patapsco Valley State Park (Catonsville, MD), Seneca Creek State Park (Gaithersburg, MD), Susquehanna State Park (Havre De Grace, MD)

Primary Responsibilities:

The Maryland Conservation Jobs Corps is a six-week employment opportunity for local youth and young adults that provides opportunities for skills training, empowerment, and employment while working to restore natural and recreational resources in Maryland State Parks and public lands.

Crew Leaders work a season from June through mid-August that includes training, a 6-week field season leading members, and program close out. Crew Leaders work to guide and inspire a team of underserved youth or young adults through conservation projects in Maryland State Parks such as invasive species removal, habitat restoration, landscaping, light construction projects, and trail work. Each Leader is based out of a specific State Park for the duration of the program and utilizes a rental vehicle provided by SCA to transport Members to and from project sites.

The Crew Leaders scope of responsibilities will include:

Crew Supervisor - facilitating teamwork, monitoring attendance, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics

Advisor - training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship

Project Lead - communicating with agency park partners, working directly with park staff, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA

Administrative responsibilities - organizing output logs, completing documentation on time, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff

Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth or young adults teaching or environmental education required.
    • Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred i.e., trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
    • Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
    • First/Aid CPR certification required.
    • Must be able to attend Park Site Visits and Crew Leader training 6/4- 6/23
    • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
      • Must have the ability to legally work in the US
      • Must have a valid drivers license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards
      • Must be able to meet SCAs criminal background check standards

        Leader Benefits and Compensation:

        Compensation: $720 per week. Leaders will be paid for training and compensated for travel to and from mandatory training and park visits.
