Rehabilitation (Part-Time) The Prevention of Blindness Society of
Metropolitan Washington is seeking an optometrist who is passionate
about providing low vision rehabilitation to join a mission-driven
nonprofit organization in Metro Washington, D.C. ( youreyes.org ) ,
with a referral-based practice established for over 20 years. Work
alongside a seasoned team seeking to expand this high-impact
specialty through patient-centered care and strong community
engagement. The position offers the option to combine low vision
rehabilitation with general pediatric optometry directly in the
community, providing clinical variety, strong mentorship, and a
level of purpose rarely found in traditional practice settings. Job
Summary: The Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan
Washington (POB) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to
the improvement and preservation of sight by providing services,
education, advocacy, and innovation. POB provides vision
rehabilitation services to visually impaired individuals, including
low-vision evaluations to optimize vision, improve quality of life,
and maintain or regain independence. POB seeks a part-time
optometrist with an interest in low-vision rehabilitation services
to join an experienced team led by an optometrist with over 20
years of field experience. We are a team of like-minded
professionals whose goal is to provide impactful and compassionate
care in our community. This is an excellent opportunity to learn
and practice a high-demand field of optometry in our community. Job
Location: Washington, DC; Maryland; and/or Virginia (based on
licensure) Work Schedule: Part-time hours Salary: $90 - $100 per
hour (commensurate with experience) Primary Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive low vision evaluations and develop
individualized vision rehabilitation plans Perform low vision
testing and assessments, including: ETDRS high-contrast acuity
testing Contrast sensitivity evaluations Low vision refraction
Visual field and central scotoma testing Lighting and glare
assessments Provide recommendations for optical and non-optical low
vision devices and strategies Collaborate with referring eye care
providers and communicate findings and recommendations Connect
patients to appropriate social, governmental, educational, and
community-based resources, with support from interdisciplinary
staff Provide patient counseling and referrals to local support
groups and services Document clinical encounters accurately and
efficiently using electronic health records (eClinicalWorks)
Participate in periodic community education and outreach
presentations Perform other related duties as assigned Basic
Qualifications: US Citizen Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an
accredited school Completion of some residency or formal training
in low vision rehabilitation Valid driver’s license in the Metro
Area (DC, MD, or VA) Reliable personal transportation Licensed to
practice optometry in at least one of the following jurisdictions:
Washington, DC; Maryland; or Virginia (Must be willing to obtain
licensure in additional jurisdictions. POB provides support
throughout the licensure process.). Strong interest in low vision
rehabilitation and serving individuals with vision loss Excellent
written and verbal communication skills Proficiency with MS Office
Suite and Google Suite Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
Occasional weekend and evenings work may be required Strong
organizational skills and attention to detail Perform other duties
and projects as required Preferred Qualifications: Two or more
years of experience in low vision rehabilitation Licensed to
practice optometry in two or more of the following jurisdictions:
Washington, DC; Maryland; Virginia (Must be willing to obtain
licensure in additional jurisdictions. POB provides support
throughout the licensure process). Experience with eClinicalWorks
or similar electronic health record systems Work Environment:
Clinical office setting with locations in DC, MD, and VA (based on
licensure) Fully equipped exam lanes at each site
